What is Leapfrog and How Do They Grade Hospitals?
Leapfrog Group is an independent, not-for-profit organization that is led by medical professionals and experts whose aim is to establish higher medical safety standards within hospitals. Leapfrog advocates for hospital transparency and higher medical practice standards to save lives that are frequently lost to medical treatment errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
Twice a year Leapfrog grades hospitals on an A to F grading scale based on their medical practices. The grade is meant to indicate how well the hospital protects their patients from preventable errors, injuries, and infections. The higher the letter grade, the more likely the hospital takes the appropriate measures to protect their patients. Each hospital is graded based on voluntary information and publicly reported data from the Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
How to Find the Score of a Hospital
Go to https://www.hospitalsafetygrade.org and look up a specific hospital or the hospitals in your area. Leapfrog’s comprehensive report breaks down each hospital’s rate of infections, problems with surgery, safety problems, practices to prevent errors, and data on doctors, nurses, and hospital staff. Each area is rated as worse than average, intermediate, or better than average.
